UTH 2023 RACE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The race that grew up to the task. Even during the competition weekend, many people said how smooth and organized the UTH was and, this was also the most popular opinion in the questionnaire. Well, I felt the same way. You may not know but UTH has managers for each area (route, logistics, start-finish, race center, volunteers) and, the aid stations also have dedicated supervisors. Most of them have been working in their respective areas for years and, the team has become well-coordinated and cohesive by now. This, along with proper preparation reflected in this year’s competition hence this evaluation from all of you. Bobek took care of a lion’s share of the preparation, so from now on two names will appear at the end of the director’s summaries: Bobek & Csanya.

For the 2023 Salomon UTH we received 1,340 registrations from 34 countries out of which 231 were foreigners. The race was organized with the help of more than 300 volunteers.

This year two new distances debuted: Salomon Vertical 500 and the Twin Peaks Trail. The former is a 2.3-kilometer uphill, while the latter covers the last 22 kilometers of the route, allowing fans of shorter distances to taste the UTH experience. Both new distances successfully passed the first test, so they will be part of the UTH series in the future. There will be no new race categories but other plans we do have…

The trail tattoo, sandwiches at the checkpoints of the ultra distances, the two Squeezy gel points and, the FNSHR sticker on the back of the start shirt were popular novelties with almost half of the participants requesting the latter.

The excessively long waiting times at the Salomon Visegrád Trail and Twin Peaks Trail starting points were unpopular and, we still need to work on that as well as the nettle section after the Lepence aid station on the UTH and Szentlászló Trail routes. We will try to replace this section with another track, so the intention is there but we are awaiting permission from the National Park.

A total of 580 people filled out the sent questionnaire (we have already started creating the infographic based on the provided answers and, soon you will see the race statistics). Thank you for taking the time to do so because the feedback from the participants is essential for the development of the competition.

We would like to say special thanks to the welcoming cities – Szentendre, Visegrad and Pilisszentlaszlo, to the supporters – Salomon, Compressport, Garmin, Leki, Maratonman DEPO, Petzl, Rudy Project, Runner’s World Magazine, Squeezy Sportnutrition, Profirent for their help and last but not least the work of the more than 300 volunteers.

The 2024 Salomon UTH will take place on May 18-19. Registration will open on November 2nd this year. We hope that many of you will return and, we will be together again on the weekend of Pentecost!
